New Year’s Resolution: Noting Glimmers
As the new year begins, many of us feel pressure to make bold resolutions. But what if we focused on something simpler and more meaningful? This year, I’m choosing to notice small joys and moments of connection—what trauma therapist Deb Dana calls glimmers.
What Are Glimmers? Glimmers are fleeting moments of safety, peace, or delight—like the warmth of the sun, the sound of laughter, or the smell of coffee brewing. Personally, I find glimmers in my kids’ giggles, watching my favorite reality TV show, or the feeling of fresh air during a walk. These small moments remind us that even on hard days, goodness exists.
How to Start Noticing Glimmers
Slow Down: Life moves fast, but pausing for just a few seconds can help you notice something beautiful.
Engage Your Senses: Glimmers often come through our senses. What sights, sounds, smells, or textures feel comforting to you?
Name Them: When you spot a glimmer, pause to acknowledge it. I like jotting mine down in the notes app on my phone.
Reflect Daily: At the end of your day, think back on the glimmers you experienced. This practice can help you notice them more in real-time.
Why It Matters Noticing glimmers isn’t about adding to your to-do list but about appreciating what’s already there. These moments help calm the nervous system and build resilience. Over time, this practice can shift your perspective, helping you see life as a series of meaningful moments, even amidst challenges.
Here’s to a year of small joys, quiet connections, and moments of light.
